Citation verification

Live

Every citation gets a verdict — verified, ambiguous, or unresolved — and a quotation from your own document is verified by finding the words in it.

What you get
  • Three verdicts — verified, ambiguous, unresolved — with a caution on anything short of verified
  • Vault quotations verified by containment, never by similarity: a fabricated clause cannot verify against a genuine one on the same topic
  • Normalisation collapses whitespace and quote characters and folds case, and deliberately does not stem, strip punctuation or drop stopwords
  • A verified vault hit returns the document, the page number, and a window of surrounding text in the document's own punctuation

Overview

What it is.

When the assistant cites something, you can send that citation back and get a verdict rather than a hover card. Three values, and they mean different things: verified means the source itself was checked and contains what was cited; ambiguous means something matching was found but nothing confirms the substance of the claim; unresolved means nothing matched — which is not the same as wrong, because our corpus is not complete, and the response says so in those words.

The strongest of the three resolvers works on your own documents. When the citation is a quotation of at least forty characters, we look for those words in your contracts by containment — a literal substring search over normalised text, scoped to your organisation. Either the words are in your document or they are not. If they are, you get the document, the page number and the surrounding text with its real punctuation. That is provenance from your own record, not a row that resembles a label.

How it works

Three steps.
End to end.

01
1. Send the citation

The label the assistant produced, plus what kind of thing it claims to be — a judgment, a statute, a document in your vault.

02
2. It is resolved against a source

Your vault by containment; the statute corpus by looking up the actual section; the judgment index by title and corroborating signals.

03
3. Read the verdict and the caution

Anything that is not verified carries a caution explaining precisely what was and was not established. Render verified differently from the other two — that is the whole point of the field.

Capabilities

What you get.

  • Searches your contracts, your knowledge base and your playbook
  • A statute citation reaches verified only when the cited section is actually present in our text of the Act
  • A title match caps at ambiguous — for a document, a case, or an Act
  • Every verdict recorded, so what the product asserted at the time is on the record
FAQ

Quick answers.

Can a case-law citation come back verified?

No, and this is deliberate. Our judgment index holds case metadata rather than judgment text, so the most we can establish is that a case answering that description exists — which is not the case saying what was claimed. A judgment citation caps at ambiguous, and matching the year, court or neutral citation strengthens the wording of the caution without changing the verdict. A metadata path to verified is exactly the failure this endpoint was rebuilt to remove.

Why containment rather than similarity on my own documents?

Because similarity would let a fabricated clause verify against a genuine clause on the same topic — the two read alike. Containment cannot do that: the words are in your document or they are not. It is a stricter test than the case-law and statute resolvers can offer, precisely because we hold your documents in full.

Does unresolved mean the citation is wrong?

No, and the response says so. It means we could not find it, and our corpus is not complete. Verify it against the official source before relying on it — but do not read unresolved as a finding of fabrication.

Does verified mean the claim is correct in law?

No. A verified vault quotation means those words are in your document. The clause may still be a bad clause, and a document that does say something is not the same as it being right. Verification is about provenance, not merit.

What about whether a case is still good law?

Where our citation graph holds no treatment data, a judgment result says in terms that subsequent treatment was not checked, rather than staying silent. Silence about overruling reads as reassurance, and it should be earned.
